Gary McVey, President, McVey Marketing Inc.

Gary McVey is president of McVey Marketing Inc., a marketing and communications consulting firm based in Poulsbo, Washington, near Seattle. Mr. McVey has more than 20 years of experience in the marketing and communications field, including 15 years as a chief marketing officer. His areas of expertise include: integrated marketing planning and strategic planning; brand architecture and development; market research and analysis; public relations; advertising; media relations and media training; direct marketing, including mail and internet campaigns; crisis communications; fund-raising and sales support; government relations and grassroots organizing; project management; and writing and editing for print and electronic media.

McVey Marketing Inc. was founded in 2006, and the firm has worked with more than a dozen clients, including some of the country's best colleges and universities, complex nonprofits, and other organizations. Prior to founding his own firm, Mr. McVey led the marketing and communications efforts of several of Minnesota’s leading organizations. He served as Associate Vice President for Market Research and Planning at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota’s top-ranked comprehensive university with more than 4,500 students. Also at Hamline University, he served as Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications and as a member of the President’s Cabinet, which was responsible for overseeing an operating budget of $60 million and 500 employees.

Mr. McVey also served as the chief marketing and communications officer for the Minnesota Private College Council, a membership-based consortium of 16 highly ranked colleges and universities. In addition, he served as Assistant Director of Public Relations and chief media relations officer for Macalester College in Saint Paul, one of the nation’s Top 25 liberal arts colleges.
During his career, he has provided communications leadership and support for several successful fund-raising campaigns, including a successful $150 million campaign at Hamline University, which exceeded its initial goal by more than $55 million.
 
He has led complex organizations through comprehensive planning and branding efforts; directed marketing efforts that led to record-setting increases in sales/admissions; planned and launched numerous successful new programs and brand extensions; raised customer retention to 10-year highs; designed and supported government lobbying campaigns that increased state funding by more than $10 million; more than doubled levels of media coverage for organizations; and led the concepting, design and writing of numerous print publications and web sites.

Mr. McVey holds a master’s degree from Hamline University in Saint Paul and a bachelor’s degree from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he studied marketing, public relations and journalism.
